Kohima: A delegation from the Nagaland Rhododendron Society met the Nagaland Governor on Monday. They asked for state support to protect the region's rhododendron population. What started as a small family project in 2017 has grown into a major environmental effort. The society now focuses on community-led conservation and protecting the state's biodiversity.
The group operates out of Jakhama. They rescue saplings and lead plantation drives with local youth. The members pitched a new Jakhama Rhododendron Conservation Centre to the Governor. This site would sit between Kisama and the Dzukou Valley. It would handle research, plant documentation, and environmental education. It also aims to pull in eco-tourists.
The society warns that forest fires and habitat loss threaten these flowers. They want a state-level policy to stop the damage. The group plans to partner with local schools and the government to scale up their work. After the meeting, the group stated, "The meeting as an important milestone in its efforts to expand the initial family initiative into a broader conservation movement." They thanked the Governor for his time and interest in their vision.
