Kohima: A two-day workshop to overhaul the Nagaland State Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan finished September 24 at Hotel Japfu in Kohima. The Nagaland State Biodiversity Board hosted the event alongside the Foundation for Ecological Security and The Nature Conservancy Centre. The meeting followed an earlier session held September 23 with community groups and various government departments.
Vedpal Singh, PCCF and HoFF, pushed for a rigorous approach. He said the revision "should not be a plain documentation exercise, but should be based on scientifically backed and research backed actions, grounded in field data and ecological realities of Nagaland."
Keynote speaker Supongnukshi, APCCF, opened the floor. Dr. Ishwar Narayanan of the Nature Conservancy Centre and Sanjay Sharma of the Foundation for Ecological Security promised ongoing support for the state. Sidramappa M Chalkapure, Member Secretary of the NSBB, chaired the event while Savinuo Kikhi closed the program.
Technical experts led deep dives into specific biodiversity targets. Moderators Dr. Sayan Banerjee, Sanjay Sharma, Yaranajit Deka, and Sunpreet Kaur ran sessions covering targets 1 through 6, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 20, 21, and 23. This work aims to bring Nagaland in line with India’s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the 23 goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The state first wrote its plan in 2005 and issued a revision in May 2022 featuring 12 specific targets.
