Kohima: Environment Minister C.L. John officially kicked off the fifth Tokhü Emong Bird Count in Kohima on November 3. The count runs from November 4 to 7, 2026. Experts expect high participation. This marks the fifth year of the state’s only dedicated bird monitoring initiative.
The launch event drew several key officials. Attendees included PCCF and HoFF Vedpal Singh, Chief Conservator of Forests Sidrammapa Chalkapure, DFO Wokha Suman W.M. Sivachar, and KfW Senior Sector Specialist Sangeeta Agarwal.
Started in 2022, the count happens alongside the Lotha community's post-harvest Tokhü Emong festival. It also hits the peak migration window for the Amur Falcon. Organizers want to grow conservation awareness across Nagaland. They hope to get regular people involved in tracking local biodiversity. The project aims to build strong, community-led protection efforts. C.L. John noted the importance of the event, stating, "The annual bird count aims to promote bird conservation awareness, encourage citizen participation in biodiversity monitoring and strengthen community-led conservation efforts across the state."
