Kohima: Fazl Ali College hosted its second annual lecture series in Mokokchung on November 3. The event focused on Gross National Happiness, a development framework from Bhutan that looks past standard economic growth. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell organized the talk for the college Founding Day. The theme centered on indigenous perspectives regarding sustainability and well-being.
Karma Yoezer, a lecturer from the Royal University of Bhutan, led the session. He detailed how Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, established the philosophy. It stands on four pillars: environmental conservation, culture preservation, good governance, and socio-economic development. Yoezer argued these pillars provide a clearer picture of progress than typical statistics.
Higher education needs a shift. Yoezer noted that institutional success should not be judged only by pass rates or accreditation. He stated, "Institutional success should not be assessed solely through pass percentages, enrolment, publications and accreditation."
He proposed four ways to weave these ideas into colleges. Schools should prioritize oral histories, local community research, and a balanced campus life. Students need preparation for meaningful community life, not just a paycheck. Associate Professor I. Narola Imchen chaired the event, while Principal Dr. I Wati Imchen gave opening remarks. The college also released the first edition of its annual lecture series during the event.
