Kohima: The Zunheboto Forest Division marked Wildlife Week 2026 with a series of events across the district. Residents participated in nature treks, educational contests, and community workshops. The theme centered on connecting habitats and helping wildlife thrive.
A major draw was the October 8 community screening of Satoi Connect in Satoi Town. This documentary highlights local conservation work and sustainable ecotourism. The early showing honored the people living in the area. Organizers noted the film recognizes the local role in conservation, stating it fulfills a "commitment to allow the local community to watch the documentary first, recognising their role in the conservation initiative."
Events stretched across Pughoboto, Suruhuto, Atoizu, Akuluto, and Satakha. On October 7, Satakha officials led a hike from Hokiye Village to Chingku Mountain. Participants included school kids, interns, and forest staff. They hugged massive trees to grasp the forest's scale. Ikusa took home the Best Trekker prize, while Kinikali Awomi was named the Youngest Trekker.
Mishilimi hosted meetings on October 6 with village councils and self-help groups to discuss fire prevention and resource management. That same day, 94 people gathered at Millennium School in Suruhuto for art and essay contests. Atoizu leaders met on October 7 to review the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and discuss anti-poaching measures. Akuluto students concluded the week with a drawing competition for grades six through twelve.
