Kohima: The Lotha Middle Range Students Union is drawing a line in the sand. Officials threatened to shut down every government school across 26 villages if the state government fails to provide a written commitment within 48 hours to fix staff shortages at Government Higher Secondary School in Sungro. The union is currently two days into an indefinite agitation.
LMRSU vice-president Zaben L Ngullie stated the group was forced to take this stance after years of government inaction. The union first raised these staffing concerns during a March 2025 tour of medical and education sectors. Despite follow-up pleas in May 2025 and August 2026, the department failed to deliver. Zaben L Ngullie said, "The union was compelled to act following prolonged neglect by the department."
GHSS Sungro serves 153 students from classes VI to XII. It holds the second-highest enrolment of any government higher secondary school in Wokha district. Union representative Tumbeni Ngullie confirmed the list of specific demands: two postgraduate teachers, two graduate teachers, two primary teachers, and one science laboratory attendant. They also require the retention of a graduate mathematics teacher position and one LDA-cum-UDA post.
The union previously sought a Lotha language teacher and an alternative English postgraduate teacher. After an August 26 press meet in Sanis and a seven-day ultimatum, officials offered only verbal promises. The LMRSU now warns that local civil society organisations will join the shutdown if the 48-hour deadline passes without a written agreement. The union holds the department fully accountable for any academic disruptions moving forward.
