Kohima: Agricultural officials gathered in Niuland on Thursday to mark Mahila Kisan Diwas. The event focused on building a resilient district through female-led farming. It took place at the District Agriculture Officer’s Training Hall.
Project Director Thepusa Nakro praised the work of women in the fields. He called on locals to exploit the district's natural resources. Better productivity brings self-reliance. Omegali, the Extra Assistant Commissioner, noted that nearly 80 per cent of land in the district currently sits idle. She challenged the assembly to find a signature crop to sell on national and global markets.
"Nearly 80 per cent of its land remained underutilised," Omegali said. Her call for unity between farmers and state departments aims to foster commercial success and local food security.
Kiyeli, a farmer from Kuhoxu village, shared her journey during the session. She admitted that farming remains a difficult and uncertain trade. She told her peers that the pride of a successful harvest makes the toil worth the effort.
Technical guidance came from Dr. Ashwini Ananda of Nagaland University. He warned that farmers must stop pests before they destroy a crop. He advocated for organic methods and strict monitoring. Dr. Bendangla Imsong of KVK Dimapur added that simple tactics like line sowing and proper spacing increase yields. The event closed with the distribution of winter vegetable seeds to encourage kitchen gardening.
