Kohima: The District Agriculture Office in Kohima commissioned water pumps and sprinklers at Kezoma village on Wednesday. This move aims to boost irrigation for winter crops. Officials provided a field demonstration on how to operate the gear.
District Agriculture Officer Kekhrieletuo Yhome wants to keep younger people on the land. Too many elderly farmers run the fields today. He argues that modern tech makes the work easier while keeping the best traditional ways alive. New sprinklers help farmers fight dry spells and shifting weather patterns. Each unit covers 150 feet. Lightweight pipes allow workers to move the setup between fields easily. Efficient use lets farmers water crops every ten days, covering more ground than before.
Yhome asked the Kezoma Baptist Church to share the equipment with the entire village. KBC Deacon Board chairman Mezangol Yongo says 80 percent of the locals farm for a living. "Abandoning agriculture would ultimately affect the farming community," Yongo said while praising the department for its continued support. The church previously received help with machinery and training.
The event was led by associate pastor Mhasivizo Thami. He noted that the second cycle of millet went into the ground during the second week of July. Workers expect to harvest that crop by late October. The first cycle, planted in March, finished in the first week of July. Department staff attended the session to oversee the rollout.
