Guwahati: Assam authorities stopped a wildlife smuggling run on September 5. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence joined forces with the Biswanath Wildlife Division to trap the suspects. They set up the operation near the Jia Bharali Bridge in Sonitpur district starting at 4 PM.
Officers caught two men with 12 Tokay Geckos, known locally as Keko Hap. The suspects are 37-year-old Santush Basfore from Rangapara and 39-year-old Ranjit Sahani of Dolongbasti. Sahani hails from the area covered by the Chariduar police station.
Teams hauled the men and the captured reptiles to the Range Forest Officer at Biswanath Chariali. Officials are now processing the case under the Wild Life Protection Act. A press release stated, "Authorities have initiated necessary legal action under the provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, as amended."
