Guwahati: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu is tightening rules for free college admissions. Students who fail their exams will lose their full fee waiver starting the next academic year. Failing students must pay half the standard admission cost to re-enroll.
Pegu says the free admission policy has boosted enrollment, but engagement remains low. He wants better accountability. Students must now maintain at least 70 per cent attendance to qualify for the benefit. Absentee students lose their free pass.
The minister also pushed for stricter birth documentation. He said, "It is mandatory for every child to obtain a birth certificate within 21 days of birth." This rule targets tribal regions where home births often go unregistered.
