Guwahati: Assam Police secured status as an Offline Verification Seeking Entity under the Unique Identification Authority of India. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the news on Friday, July 17. The force is the first in the Northeast and the third nationwide to adopt this technology.
Officers now scan Aadhaar QR codes to verify identity. It works without internet access. This helps patrols in remote hill districts, riverine char areas, and border villages where signals fail. Criminals often use fake documents. This tool stops that cold. It checks for a digital, tamper-proof seal from the UIDAI.
"Being an OVSE will allow a police patrol party to instantly verify a person's credentials by scanning the Aadhaar QR code without depending on internet speed," Sarma said. Police can pull names, photos, addresses, genders, and birth dates on the spot. They do not need to hit the central database for every check.
The system speeds up services like passport, tenant, character, and arms license checks. The state aims to modernize its law enforcement operations. "With this registration, Assam takes another step forward towards efficient, watertight and people-friendly policing," Sarma said. The move secures data while pushing police work into the digital age.
