Tripura Deploys High-Tech Surveillance to Crack Down on Traffic Violations

Agartala: Tripura is overhauling its traffic enforcement. Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed on August 31 that the state is installing high-tech gear to hunt down violators across Agartala. The city now hosts 515 CCTV cameras and 43 Automated Number Plate Recognition units. Workers also set up 81 Red Light Violation Detection cameras and 77 Variable Message Display boards to keep drivers in check.

The grid relies on 22 smart traffic signals and GPS tracking in 260 vehicles. Authorities equipped NAKA points with body-worn cameras, speed radar guns, and ray analyzers. Speed checkers now flash warnings near the Tripura High Court and along key stretches between Ashram Chowmuhani and Chandrapur SBT. Further monitoring points sit between ONGC Bank Chowmuhani and the main ONGC entrance.

Saha explained how the backend handles offenders. He said, "Traffic violation cases are not directly registered through CCTV or e-Challan systems." Instead, the tech generates prosecution reports and tracks fines via e-Challan machines and QR codes. Officials are also pushing public awareness through social media and digital posters to highlight Motor Vehicles Act rules. Polluting vehicles face strict scrutiny, with the government ordering that some be scrapped.

The state intends to expand these digital controls beyond the capital. Future plans involve adding more surveillance gear through the Integrated Command and Control Centre to cover urban areas across Tripura.
