Imphal: Manipur launched its first state-of-the-art Aadhaar Seva Kendra on Thursday. The facility sits at Wahengbam Leikai, near Hotel Bheigo, in the Imphal West district. It provides a central hub for new enrolments, biometric updates, and demographic corrections. The centre operates daily, excluding public holidays, and uses five active kits to process resident requests.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Home Department, N. Ashok Kumar, cut the ribbon. He was joined by UIDAI Deputy Director General Ngachan Zimik, Additional Secretary A. Subhash Singh, Director Col. Abhishek Kaushik, and Deputy Commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar Singh. The government spent years pushing for this dedicated office to replace the need for navigating scattered enrolment points.
"While Aadhaar enrolment in Manipur has reached around 87–88 per cent, enrolment among children in the 0–5 years age group remains comparatively low," Kumar said. He noted that errors in early documents often cause major headaches during board exams. The state is now partnering with hospitals and the Social Welfare Department to push registration for young children.
Officials are also stressing the Mandatory Biometric Update. Children must update their biometrics twice: once at age five and again at age 15. These updates remain free of charge until September 30, 2026. Without these records, users face the risk of Aadhaar suspension and blocked access to scholarships or Direct Benefit Transfer schemes. The new centre includes wheelchair access and a formal grievance system. Residents can book slots via the official UIDAI appointment portal.
