Nagaland Government Mandates Aadhaar App for Identity Verification

Kohima: The Nagaland government ordered all state departments and district administrations to accept digital identity credentials from the new Aadhaar App. This directive follows a mandate from the Unique Identification Authority of India issued on April 30, 2026. The app aims to boost digital accessibility for residents across the state.

Users can download the tool on both Android and iOS devices to present or verify their identity. It keeps the 12-digit Aadhaar number private during transactions. The app allows users to share either full or partial identity details as verifiable credentials. The state government confirmed that "the details so shared are legally valid under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which provides legal recognition to electronic records."

These digital records carry the same weight as traditional documents like the Aadhaar letter, e-Aadhaar, or m-Aadhaar under the Aadhaar Act, 2016. Agencies must now comply with these rules when vetting residents. The shift moves the state closer to paperless identity verification.
