Nagaland Bans Plastic Fire Tanks for Building Permits

Kohima: The Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services in Nagaland has tightened building safety rules. A circular issued October 15, 2026, forces building owners to ditch plastic storage for fire suppression. Plastic or Sintex tanks no longer count toward fire safety requirements for those seeking a No Objection Certificate. This change is effective immediately.

Buildings must now house dedicated water storage made of concrete, masonry, or steel. These structures must meet the capacity standards set by local inspection officers. Officials directed Officers-in-Charge to reject any NOC applications that rely on plastic tanks. The department stated, "The provision regarding water storage capacity for fire-fighting and life-safety requirements, specifically where Sintex or plastic water storage tanks are used, is no longer applicable to existing buildings seeking a NOC from the Fire & Emergency Services."

Property owners must swap out current plastic systems to comply. The mandate covers all existing structures applying for new certificates. No case goes forward without these upgrades.
