Assam Government Mandates Three-Day Liquor Ban for Silchar Polls

Guwahati: The Assam government ordered a three-day dry period for the Silchar Municipal Corporation area to cover the upcoming municipal elections. Authorities acted under Section 135(C) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and Rule 326(A) of the Assam Excise Rules, 2016. The goal is simple: ensure a free, fair, and peaceful vote.

Liquor sales and possession are strictly banned on October 2, October 3, and October 6. These dates cover the day before the election, polling day, and the final counting process. Any day scheduled for a re-poll will also trigger the dry day restriction. The order explicitly prohibits the sale, supply, distribution, and personal storage of all intoxicating substances.

Wholesale warehouses and all retail outlets face total closure during this window. This includes IMFL shops, club bars, hotels, and country spirit stores. Officials issued a sharp warning regarding compliance: "Violations would invite action under the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act and Rules, as well as Section 135(C) of the Representation of the People Act."
