Assam Flood Relief Sparks Calls for Massive Compensation and Political Clashes

Guwahati: The Tai Ahom Jatiya Parishad is pushing for a Rs 20,000-crore financial package from the Centre to aid flood-hit Upper Assam. This demand follows a meeting in Moran where the committee resolved to send a delegation to assess total damages. The group also directed members to register as Ahom Hindu or Ban-Phi-Dam in the coming census to secure their identity, while urging them to list Tai Axomiya as their mother tongue.

Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi remains dissatisfied with current state support. The government recently offered Rs 15,000 to families, with Rs 25,000 earmarked for those in Sivasagar and Charaideo. Gogoi says these sums fail to cover the loss of homes and property. He demanded a total of Rs 10 lakh per family, distributed in stages. "The government should provide at least Rs 10 lakh to every affected family. It can be released in instalments. First, provide Rs 2 lakh immediately so that people can begin rebuilding their lives, and then release the remaining amount in phases," Gogoi said.

Gogoi also accused officials of shortchanging families on aid. He claims that relief packets promised to contain 8 kg of rice only held 5 kg. The legislator demanded a probe into these shortages. Mahamara BJP MLA Suruj Dehingia rejected these claims. He branded Gogoi a reel hero obsessed with social media optics. Dehingia maintains that BJP workers are the real heroes handling actual relief efforts on the ground.
