Guwahati: The Assam Congress officially severed its political ties with Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal on September 3. This split takes effect immediately. Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, ordered the move. APCC General Secretary Ramanna Baruah released the formal circular.
Congress leaders claim the regional party broke the core principles of their opposition bloc. They allege Raijor Dal members frequently launched personal attacks against their allies. The party specifically condemned what it described as “baseless, unwarranted and derogatory” remarks directed at various opposition figures.
Tensions boiled over last week. On Sunday, APCC Media and Communication Department chairman Bedabrat Bora and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur held a joint press conference. They accused Akhil Gogoi of acting like a government agent. Bora claimed Gogoi only won his Sivasagar seat because of Congress support. He also defended the work of leaders like Debabrata Saikia during recent flood relief efforts.
The two parties originally joined forces to challenge the BJP ahead of previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. In the May 2026 Assembly polls, the BJP took 82 of 126 seats. Congress secured 19, while the Bodoland Peoples Front and Asom Gana Parishad grabbed 10 each. The All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal each took two seats, and the All India Trinamool Congress took one. Congress officials stated they remain committed to opposing the BJP government over its policies and governance record.
