Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh signed a deal Tuesday with Norway-based Tidal Sail AS. The two parties will build a 500 kW River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Project. It is the first of its kind in India. The Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies signed the agreement under the India-Norway Green Partnership. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Innovation Norway provide support for the work.

This technology pulls electricity straight from river currents. No heavy civil infrastructure is needed. Officials call it a sustainable and cost-effective energy source. The plant sits in the state's vast river systems. It could provide power to remote, hard-to-reach locations. Energy security is the main goal.

Science and Technology Minister Dasanglu Pul called the deal a landmark move. She said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to innovation, sustainability and international cooperation. The project aims to cut fossil fuel use and lower carbon emissions. It also keeps river ecosystems intact.

Norwegian Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, says the state is an ideal spot for the test. The project is already branching out. Collaboration between the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute covers geothermal energy and sustainable infrastructure. Officials hope this move makes Arunachal Pradesh a leader in renewable energy tech.
