Guwahati: An ICU physician died by suicide Wednesday while working at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati. Staff discovered Prayash Singhal unresponsive on the second floor of the hospital's new building. He was on duty at the time.
Hospital employees alerted local authorities after finding the doctor. A police team arrived at the scene shortly after to start a probe. Investigators are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the death. Official sources noted the doctor may have faced mental distress, though no formal cause has been established. Investigators recovered used syringes and vials of Propofol from the doctor's chamber. Soroj Doley, officer-in-charge at the local station, said police suspect Singhal injected a high dose of the sedative. The 41-year-old physician had been with the hospital for six years and had started his shift at 8 pm on Tuesday.
According to hospital staff, Singhal told colleagues at 4 am that he was going to rest and requested not to be disturbed. Other doctors were alerted when staff sensed something was wrong around 8 am. Police were notified at 9:30 am.
The body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem. Principal Babul Kumar Bezbaruah noted that an overdose of the sedative could trigger respiratory and cardiovascular failure, though the official cause of death awaits the final report. Police also noted reports that the doctor was struggling with depression following a recent divorce, though his family has yet to comment on the matter.
