Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh officials signed a deal Tuesday with Norway-based Tidal Sail AS. They will build India's first 500 kW River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Project. The Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies formalised the agreement under the India-Norway Green Partnership. It has backing from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Innovation Norway.

This technology pulls power directly from river currents. It avoids massive civil construction work. The project provides a cheap, green energy alternative. Science and Technology Minister Dasanglu Pul called it a landmark for the state's clean energy shift. She praised the commitment to international cooperation. Pul stated, "This collaboration is more than just a technology demonstration, it is a significant step towards strengthening energy security, promoting green development, and providing sustainable power solutions for remote communities while preserving our fragile river ecosystems."

The initiative aims to diversify energy sources. It could provide electricity to hard-to-reach areas. Norwegian Ambassador May-Elin Stener pointed to the state's river networks as the perfect testing ground. This technology complements other energy sources. It may also lower fossil fuel reliance and cut carbon emissions.

The partnership goes beyond this plant. The state is already working with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute. They are looking at geothermal energy and sustainable infrastructure projects. This deal expands that relationship. It positions the region as a hub for future renewable tech. Officials believe it will bolster long-term energy security across the Himalayas.
