Arunachal Rights Group Demands Probe into Kamle Hydro Project Fraud

Itanagar: The Human Rights of Arunachal, known as HRA, is pushing for an independent investigation into financial corruption surrounding the Kamle Hydro Power Project. In a September 1 letter, the group detailed claims of inflated, fictitious, and duplicate compensation bills for land and property affected by the development.

HRA alleges a web of collusion between officials, contractors, intermediaries, and private individuals. The group suspects that land records, ownership documents, and valuation reports were manipulated to funnel public funds to ineligible beneficiaries. They want authorities to conduct a full beneficiary-wise audit and perform physical verification of the properties involved. The investigation must ensure all land acquisition and resettlement rules were followed.

To ensure impartiality, the group requested the Central Bureau of Investigation handle the case to keep it free from local influence. They also demanded a special audit of all payments and sanctions. Authorities must now secure original files and digital records to prevent evidence tampering. HRA also asked for legal protections for witnesses who come forward with information regarding the scheme.

The group emphasized that they support progress when it respects the law. "HRA is not against genuine development projects," the letter stated, noting that their mission is to promote work that is "lawful, transparent and beneficial to the people." The organization has asked the Prime Minister to take suo motu cognisance of the situation and initiate a time-bound probe to recover misappropriated funds.
