Shillong: The New Delhi-based Chakma Development Foundation of India (CDFI) demanded urgent intervention from the Election Commission of India on Monday. They claim officials are targeting 1,292 Chakma voters across four Assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh during a roll revision. The list includes 774 voters in Doimukh, 413 in Bordumsa-Diyum, 56 in Chowkham, and 49 in Miao.
CDFI founder Suhas Chakma says one person filed objections against 30 voters without knowing them. This reveals a dangerous pattern. Hearings are set for September 2 in Diyun and Bordumsa. The CDFI wants central security forces there to stop potential violence. They fear intimidation.
Suhas Chakma noted the legal history of his people. He stated, "The Chakmas have been voting in Arunachal Pradesh for the last 26 years." Court rulings from the Delhi High Court in 2000, the Gauhati High Court in 2013, and the Supreme Court in 2015 have all backed the rights of Chakma citizens.
Trouble started after the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union formed a committee on July 14, 2026, to scrub the rolls. On August 22, officials improperly accepted objections against 41 voters in Moitripur after the August 20 deadline passed. The CDFI calls this racial discrimination and a breach of Article 325 of the Constitution. They want the Chief Electoral Officer to ignore these broad, baseless objections. They demand independent observers for every single hearing.
