Agartala: Doctors at the Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital completed two more kidney transplants this week. The state-run facility performed the eighth and ninth operations on consecutive days. The Tripura Health Department confirmed both patients remain stable.
The eighth surgery took place Tuesday for a 22-year-old man from Chailengta, Dhalai district. His 45-year-old mother provided the organ. On Wednesday, teams operated on a 23-year-old man from Padmanagar, Sepahijala district. His 45-year-old mother served as the donor for this procedure as well. Each operation lasted six hours, running from 9 am until 3 pm.
Specialists from AGMC and GBP Hospital worked alongside a transplant team from Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in Manipur. Local doctors involved include nephrologists Dr. Manas Gope, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das, and Dr. Udayan Saha. Urologists Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh, and Dr. Jiban Debnath led the surgical effort with anaesthesiologists Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar and Dr. Tapan Debbarma. The visiting Manipur team included Dr. Paonam Samarendra Singh, Dr. Maharabam Mahade, Dr. Taijenjam Kennedy Singh, and Dr. Shreya Kumar Dubey.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha praised the progress. He stated, "We are conducting the surgeries in collaboration with Shija hospital but now our doctors are also adequately skilled to conduct the operations on their own." Saha eyes future liver and heart transplants at the facility.
The government requires rigorous approvals, medical checks, and compatibility testing before any surgery. All nine procedures at the hospital were free of charge. The state also pays for the travel costs of the visiting team from Manipur.
