Imphal: Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited and the Manipur Seed and Organic Certification Agency inked a deal to overhaul seed production in Manipur. The agreement aims to sharpen processing and distribution while getting quality seeds into the hands of local farmers. Managing Director Chetan Joshi and Director of Agriculture Peter Salam signed the documents at an office in Imphal. Commissioner-cum-Secretary T. Pamei witnessed the event.
BBSSL operates under the Ministry of Cooperation and the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act of 2002. They want a steady seed chain to stop the reliance on imported supplies. MASOCA hit the ground running on June 6, 2026, with a mandate to verify seed quality and certify organic produce across the state.
The work starts now. Joshi confirmed the plan involves bringing in certified seeds from other states while the team builds up Manipur's own production infrastructure. He said, "The initiative would begin immediately, with certified seeds from established seed chains in other States to be supplied to Manipur while local production capacity is developed."
Officials will map out specific plots for seed production, separating them from general cultivation areas. If the state cannot grow a certain seed, the partners will source it from elsewhere to meet local demand.
