Woman Dies After Dowry Attack in Assam as Family Blasts Police Inaction

Guwahati: Ambia Khatun died early Friday at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. She suffered critical burns on July 2 at her matrimonial home in Dhubri district. Her family claims her husband and in-laws doused her in kerosene and lit a match. This followed years of persistent dowry harassment.

The victim married Nur Alam three years ago. Her father, Abdul Ali of Barundanga village, says community leaders tried to stop the abuse, but the violence persisted. The family filed an FIR at Golakganj Police Station against Nur Alam, Sattar Ali, Momina Bibi, and Aksina Khatun. No one is in jail.

The family says police failed to act. They claim the suspects operate with impunity. The victim's father specifically questioned the authorities: "The accused had received protection from a network of touts."

Nur Alam allegedly visited the hospital while his wife fought for her life. He vanished shortly before she died. Relatives claim he stole medical documents, treatment cash, and her mobile phone. Police visited the grieving family Saturday to promise arrests. Locals and activists now demand a full investigation into the murder and the department's sluggish response.
