Guwahati: Assam police rescued a nine-year-old girl in Dergaon after a kidnapping plot turned into a massive search operation. The child vanished from Mariani on Tuesday afternoon after her maternal uncle, Sagar Ghosh, and his wife, Manisha Ghosh, lured her away from her home. The couple had spent three days hiding at Room No. 109 of Loknath Bhawan before they struck.
The captors turned aggressive quickly. At 5 p.m., the family received a demand for 60 lakh rupees. The kidnappers threatened to kill the child if the cash did not arrive by 8 p.m. and warned the family to stay silent. The father contacted the press instead. Mariani Police tracked the girl to Islamnagar and rescued her at 2 a.m. The child is safe.
Police have two suspects behind bars. Officers caught Sagar Ghosh, known as Tarzen, in Koilakhata and arrested Wasim Rahman, alias Kanakai, in Islamnagar. Investigators seized a Maruti Suzuki Baleno with license plate AS05B 9917 and a red scooter registered as AS05W 4263. Both vehicles allegedly played a role in the crime.
Three people remain on the loose. Manisha Ghosh, Rahul Ali of Islamnagar, and a man identified only as Mon from Phukan Nagar are currently absconding. Police are hunting them down now. Reflecting on the swift police response, one officer noted, "The girl has been handed over to her family." Authorities continue to scour the region to close the final gaps in the case.
