West Garo Hills Preps for Ganol Dam Emergency Drill

Shillong: Officials gathered at the Superintending Engineer's office in Rongkon on Wednesday to map out disaster plans. This tabletop exercise set the stage for a full-scale mock drill at the Ganol Dam site. The drill kicks off Thursday at 11:00 AM.

The District Disaster Management Authority of West Garo Hills and the Ganol Small Hydro Project organized the event. Government officials, emergency teams, village headmen, and community leaders from downstream villages attended the session. The meeting centered on disaster response and readiness.

Jude Rangku T. Sangma, CEO of the District Disaster Management Authority, opened the event. Enriques M. Sangma, AEE (Civil) at the Ganol Small Hydro Project, briefed the room on dam parameters and trigger levels. Retired Col. K.C. Monappa led technical sessions on inundation mapping and response planning. Participants engaged in simulations to test their decision-making skills.

Robson Ch. Marak, Superintending Engineer of the Ganol Small Hydro Project, offered the final thanks. The project aims to improve coordination across agencies. Authorities say the drill intends to "strengthen coordinated response, improve disaster preparedness and ensure timely action in the event of any potential dam-related emergency in West Garo Hills, particularly for the vulnerable settlements located downstream of the dam."
