Shillong: West Garo Hills marked International Youth Day on Wednesday in Tura. The event, held at the Working Women Hostel, centered on the theme of Youth Advancing Multilateral Cooperation Through Technology and Partnership. The District Sports Office organized the gathering.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Pearla Tatyana D Sangma addressed the crowd. She identified drug abuse as the primary threat to the region. The issue extends beyond the individual, as it inflicts deep suffering on families and the broader community. The government cannot solve this crisis alone. Success depends on youth initiative. Sangma urged those in attendance to reject narcotics and spread awareness to their peers. She reminded the audience that, "Drugs jakkalaniara jakkalgipa mandesan neng·nikaniko ra·baaia ong·ja indiba jatna songsarna aro ma·a pana bang·a neng·nikaniko ra·baa."
The program highlighted the Mera Yuva Bharat scheme. This initiative provides young people with diverse skill-building opportunities. ADC Sangma encouraged attendees to register for the program. It now involves multiple government departments working in concert.
Resource person Rev. Nicky N Sangma spoke on the importance of time management and goal setting. He emphasized that youth must convert their aspirations into actionable progress. Rakan A Sangma, joint secretary of 100 Drums Wangala, echoed this call to action. He urged the youth to view themselves as the pillars of society. He advised them to prioritize their studies and engage in sports while preserving A·chik cultural traditions.
International Youth Parliament delegate Nandini Sangma and Machahary Rabha shared their experiences with international platforms. ADC Sangma presented a memento to Nandini Sangma during the ceremony. The event concluded with a traditional Do·kaku Art and Cultural Wangala dance and a musical performance by Noga Sangma.
