Agartala: Heavy monsoon rains are hammering Tripura, forcing the state government to shut all schools in West Tripura and Sepahijala districts on Monday. The Education Department also postponed the Bochor Bachao examination under the Tripura Board of Secondary Education. Officials warned that dangerous weather will likely persist until July 16.
Agartala bore the brunt of the storm. The capital recorded 138 mm of rain in 24 hours. Bishramganj followed with 116 mm. South Tripura saw 85 mm, while Amarpur recorded 61.3 mm. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for West Tripura and Sepahijala. Heavy to very heavy downpours are expected through Tuesday morning.
Multiple atmospheric systems are driving the deluge. A trough stretches from Bihar to Manipur. Cyclonic circulations hover over Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal. Residents must stay alert. The IMD warned of potential landslides, power outages, and flooded infrastructure across the region.
Infrastructure is failing under the pressure. The West Tripura district administration closed the Katakhal embankment and the Pragati Road stretch to all traffic. Commuters must find other routes. Officials are also scrambling to secure flood-prone zones.
South Tripura District Magistrate Mohammed Sajad P inspected the 15-km flood-control embankment along the Muhuri River in Belonia. He confirmed 80 per cent of the construction is finished. The remaining work should wrap up before the festive season. Regarding subsidence concerns, officials noted, "permanent repairs would be carried out after the monsoon." For now, vulnerable sections get brick soling and retaining walls.
