Agartala: Northeast India is shifting from a passive consumer of space tech to a regional hub for development and testing. Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu pushed this agenda during the Northeast India Space Workshop 2026 held this morning at FREMAA, AWC, in Guwahati. The Space Industry Association of India teamed up with the North Eastern Space Applications Centre to host the event. It aligns with National Space Day celebrations.
Nallu expects the region to lead national efforts. He believes geography and developmental needs make the area perfect for testing new space-based solutions. The Governor stated, "Tripura, along with its sister states of the Northeast, is poised to move from the periphery to the forefront of India's space technology journey." The focus remains on improving public services, agriculture, connectivity, and disaster management through scientific planning.
Tripura already rolled out the Northeast's first Digital Forest Rights Act Atlas. Experts from the Tripura Space Applications Centre helped build the project to protect tribal interests via high-tech governance. The workshop pulled in policymakers, industry bosses, startups, and international partners to talk about future growth. They want to create jobs for local youth and boost the national New Space ecosystem.
Dr. Subba Rao Pavuluri, President of SIA-India, opened the event with a welcome address. Assam Science and Technology Secretary Pallav Kumar Jha and Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary Dr. Srinivas Rao delivered special speeches. Anil Prakash, the Director General of SIA-India, closed the session with a vote of thanks.
