Agartala: Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath vowed to clear Rs 30 crore in outstanding payments to Tripura Electricity Corporation Limited contractors by August 15. The promise arrived Saturday following a tense standoff between the government and the TECL Contractors Association.
A five-member delegation met with Nath after the group suspended all maintenance and development work statewide. Contractors had launched an indefinite strike just days prior, citing extreme financial strain from the mounting arrears. The stoppage paralyzed electricity service projects across the region.
Nath ordered the corporation's Managing Director to act fast. He wants the debt settled immediately. Joint secretary Sapan Das confirmed the order will keep the payment process moving forward. The strike is now over. Both sides agreed that prompt cash flow remains the only way to fix the local power grid.
Association members expressed optimism that the upcoming payout will resolve their cash crunch. "The minister had instructed the corporation’s Managing Director to take immediate steps for settlement, ensuring that the matter would not drag further," said Das. Contractors plan to resume full operations as soon as the money hits their accounts.
