Guwahati: Suborno Isaac Bari is fourteen. He is also a world-renowned researcher at NYU and a self-described prodigy who is currently starting his PhD. He recently visited Guwahati for an event hosted by the Byatikram group and Green School International. Behind the headlines, however, Bari remains a teenager who still takes direction from his father.
He rejects the genius label. Bari attributes his success to 90 percent effort, 9 percent luck, and only 1 percent talent. He notes that systemic advantages, such as his upbringing, played a major role. "I think it's very disingenuous to just reduce someone who is successful at a young age to 'prodigy' or 'genius,'" he says, citing that without the right environment, he would not be in his current position.
Bari graduated high school at twelve. He now focuses his research on the Riemann zeta function, an unsolved mathematical challenge. He is not seeking a breakthrough to end all theories. Instead, he aims to prove smaller, adjacent concepts to validate his doctoral research. He views artificial intelligence with deep skepticism, fearing it will erode objective truth and replace human critical thinking.
His family history influenced his path. His father studied physics while working night shifts as a security guard, discussing complex problems with Bari from a young age. His mother manages the logistics of his international lectures, while his 23-year-old brother currently works at NASA. Despite his academic intensity, Bari maintains hobbies like listening to Coldplay, though he famously quit piano because he disliked the practice.
Bari remains critical of the Indian education system, arguing that its exam-focused model stifles creativity. He plans to pursue a professorship in the United States while continuing to teach in India. When meeting students, he offers simple advice: pursue what you enjoy. He asks, "Can you let it go?" if the work fails to bring genuine happiness.
