Students train in emergency first aid and life support at Patkai

Kohima: Nursing experts from the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research teamed up with the Patkai Christian College Department of Education on August 20. They ran a one-day workshop focused on basic first aid and life support. Students gained hands-on experience for high-stakes medical situations.

Prof. L. Lidziisa Mao opened the event. She defined first aid as immediate, temporary care provided before a doctor arrives. She told the group: "The key objectives of preserving life, preventing deterioration, promoting recovery, protecting the victim and providing psychological support." She also urged students to stay calm and check for major injuries.

The training moved into specific injury response. Intern Kechegi Khing showed the group how to manage bleeding and nosebleeds, along with care for fainting. Next, intern Imnasangla Longkumer tackled breathing techniques. She taught the crowd box breathing and diaphragmatic methods to manage panic attacks.

Longkumer then moved to life support procedures. She outlined the steps for spotting cardiac arrest, calling for help, and performing CPR. She coached students on chest compression rates, depth, and the use of Automated External Defibrillators. She made it clear that these skills are for everyone, not just medical professionals. A quick bystander reaction saves lives.

The nursing team, which included tutors Akumtoshi L. Longkumer and Rashmita Boruah plus 10 interns, oversaw the final practical demonstrations. Students practiced chest compressions under supervision. Razoukhrülü Curhah, the head of the Education Department, closed the session with a formal vote of thanks.
