Imphal: Ukhrul Higher Secondary School is falling apart. More than 1,000 students struggle in a facility plagued by massive staff vacancies and decaying infrastructure. The Students' Union has issued an urgent plea to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, warning that the institution faces an impending academic disaster.
The school's English Department is a shell of itself. With three of four sanctioned posts empty due to superannuation, one teacher handles the entire student body. Similar shortages haunt other subjects: Geography has three vacancies, and the school’s Commerce stream has effectively collapsed after the lone lecturer was sent to work in Senapati. Students are demanding a significant staffing overhaul, specifically asking for English posts to jump from four to 12, alongside new positions for Tangkhul, History, Political Science, Education, and Home Science.
Anger is mounting over personnel management. The Union condemned transfer orders dated August 12, 2026, which stripped the school of newly regularized lecturers without providing replacements. The Union stated the school was left "high and dry" by these administrative decisions. Students now endure split shifts to cope with overcrowding, with some classes holding 200 pupils.
The physical environment is equally grim. Ninety percent of the windows lack glass, forcing students to sit at desks soaked by rainwater. Over 1,000 students fight for access to only 11 toilets and 18 urinals. The Union now demands 15 to 20 new classrooms, a multipurpose hall, updated furniture, and basic technology like computers and smart boards to provide a functional learning space.
