Students Demand New Anti-Infiltration Gate on Jowai-Dawki Road

Shillong: The Pnar Students Movement (PSM) wants the state government to immediately bring back an Anti-Infiltration Directorate check gate on the Jowai-Dawki road. A student delegation met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday to push the demand. They worry about illegal border crossings from Bangladesh.

PSM Legal Secretary Lidarpaia Dkhar said a gate used to screen people and vehicles in the Dawki sector. That system went defunct in recent years. It left a major transit corridor wide open. "An anti-infiltration gate had previously operated in the Dawki sector to screen vehicular and pedestrian movement," Dkhar said. The student group claims this lack of oversight puts border residents at risk and threatens internal security.

The memorandum demands a fully functional gate at a strategic highway spot. They want the state to hire and post dedicated enforcement staff to man the site. The PSM also wants the police, district administration, and intelligence units to start running joint patrols. These operations should focus on vulnerable footpaths, river routes, and secondary roads throughout the border belt.

The group sent copies of their proposal to the Superintendent of Police for the Anti-Infiltration Directorate. They also delivered the documents to the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of West Jaintia Hills.
