Shillong: Meghalaya established a state-level committee to track illegal foreigners. This includes anyone overstaying since January 1, 2011. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the move Tuesday in the Assembly. He responded to a 10-point charter from the VPP. A Principal Secretary from the Home Department leads the new group. They will report to the Ministry of Home Affairs every month.
Authorities have mobilized 12 District Task Forces to find Bangladeshi nationals. Surprise checks happen monthly. The state manages 18 Anti-Infiltration Check Posts along the border. They lean on the BSF for joint patrols and electronic surveillance. Locals also help with monitoring. Sangma noted, "detection, verification and deportation will continue in accordance with the law, alongside monitoring and inter-agency coordination."
Numbers prove the crackdown is active. Officials detected 736 illegal foreign nationals and prosecuted them since 2021. Authorities deported 262 people after they finished jail time. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act of 2016 keeps growing. By August 2026, registration hit 966 localities and 561 sub-localities. Records show 1,653 landlords and 5,042 tenants currently registered under the law.
