Shillong: Assam and Meghalaya authorities struck a deal to tighten border security. Tensions near Maikhuli forced the move. Officials from Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district and Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district met on Tuesday at the Dispur Co-District office to fix a plan for peace.
Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini and Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Swapneel Paul led the initial talks. A field-level session followed, co-chaired by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi and the Co-District Commissioner of Dispur. Police brass and local representatives attended the sit-down. They pushed for joint vigilance and constant communication between field units.
Village heads and local elders aired grievances during the session. They voiced a clear intent to cooperate with police to squash disputes before they escalate. The group officially stated they are "willing to work with the district administrations and police to address those issues and keep the peace."
Administrators pledged to maintain open lines between staff on the ground. Quick intervention remains the priority. The two states committed to settling local squabbles through dialogue to ensure long-term stability along the contested boundary.
