Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) wants the Ministry of Home Affairs to step in. Tensions are boiling over on the Meghalaya-Assam border. The group wrote to Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Monday. They demand an immediate probe into frequent road blockades and the obstruction of movement between the two states.
HITO claims Indian Army personnel in a civilian vehicle were stopped on a National Highway. The soldiers identified themselves, but the confrontation continued. HITO says the troops faced misbehaviour and were forced to wait on the road. They provided video evidence to authorities to back these claims.
"The organisation alleged that Indian Army personnel travelling in a civilian vehicle were obstructed on the highway despite identifying themselves."
The group wants a time-bound, impartial inquiry. They pointed to a December 2024 incident involving the Kutumba Suraksha Parishad to show this is a recurring problem. HITO now pushes for a formal coordination mechanism between the Ministry of Home Affairs, Assam, and Meghalaya. They believe better communication can stop people from taking the law into their own hands.
The group argues that unchecked incidents lead to retaliation. They are calling for preventive measures to keep the National Highway clear for citizens, emergency services, and security forces. HITO claims their intervention aims to force a solution through constitutional channels rather than escalating the conflict.
