Steel Bridge Restores Access to Remote Arunachal Border Village

Itanagar: Engineers launched a steel bridge over the Kumey River in Arunachal Pradesh. The project restores the path to Huri village in the Kurung Kumey district. A flash flood destroyed the previous 66-metre Bailey hanging bridge on July 13. Heavy rain in the upper reaches of the river caused that surge.

Border Roads Task Force Officer Commanding Sandeep Tiwari led the effort alongside the local district administration. The team worked quickly to reconnect the Damin circle near the Line of Actual Control. "The successful launching of the steel structure marks a major milestone in restoring full connectivity to the region. The remaining works are expected to be completed within the next 3 to 4 days, after which the Damin-Huri road will be reopened for the movement of all types of vehicles," Tiwari said.

Temporary log crossings served residents while the main span remained down. Those crossings allowed foot traffic and kept emergency supplies moving. Kurung Kumey Deputy Commissioner Cheechung Chukhu expects the project to reach full completion by the first week of August. Crews are working on a war footing now. They aim to finish the approach work and structural finishing within the week. This bridge provides vital heavy and all-weather vehicle access to border outposts.
