Itanagar: Student groups in Arunachal Pradesh gave the state government 15 days to fix the crumbling Akajan-Likabali-Bame Road. The Basar Area Students Union and the Jigo Yegi Student Union formed a Joint Action Committee to force action. They delivered formal demands to the Deputy Commissioners of Lower Siang and Leparada districts. Time is running out.
This 100-km stretch connects Lower Siang, Leparada, West Siang, Shi Yomi, and Upper Subansiri districts. It serves as a transit point for international border zones in Mechuka and Tuting. Joint Action Committee Chairman Nyakar Taipodia stated, "Instead of improving, the road condition has continued to worsen every year. It is not only causing immense hardship to the public but also poses a serious national security concern, as the Likabali Army base depends on this road for movement of defence personnel and military equipment."
BASU President and committee Vice-Chairman Giken Riba blasted local leaders for dodging their duties. He claims officials pass the buck between NHIDCL and GREF rather than fixing the route. The federal government recently tagged this as a strategic project. Advocates now want the Border Roads Organisation to take over for faster progress. If no fix arrives in two weeks, the group plans to ramp up public protests.
