Guwahati: Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya met Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Thursday, August 13. He wants action. The BJP leader submitted a plan for seven major road projects across his Silchar constituency and the wider Barak Valley. He argues these roads are vital for healthcare, education, farming, and local trade.
The proposal includes three four-laning projects: 22 km of State Highway-39 from SMCH to Dwarbond Bazar, 7 km of NH-306 from Rangirkhari Point to Sonabarighat, and 6 km of NH-37 between Capital Point and Silchar ISBT. He also pushed for a 12.65-km greenfield bypass linking the Silchar Annapurna Bridge to NH-27 at Dolu Bazar to clear heavy truck traffic from the city center.
Other requests cover the 28.5-km stretch of SH-38 from E&D Colony to Kalain, plus 13 km of NH-37 along the Kashipur route and 12 km of the same highway along the Rongpur route. Suklabaidya also pushed for formal sanctions on older road proposals that gained in-principle approval back in 2017-18.
Gadkari reviewed the list and promised to prioritize the older, stalled projects. The Minister told the MP he would push the state government to fix failing state highways. Suklabaidya noted that "improved road connectivity would be important for unlocking the economic potential of the region, strengthening links with neighbouring states and facilitating the movement of people, goods and essential services." His requests now sit with the Ministry for formal review.
