Sikkim Commission Proposes Eight-Point Plan to Combat Glacial Hazards

Gangtok: Sikkim officials now hold a roadmap to survive the next big freeze. The Commission on Glacial Hazards delivered a report packed with eight specific mandates to bolster state defenses against killer floods. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang accepted the document from chairperson Dr. Akhilesh Gupta during a meeting attended by Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha.

Sikkim formed this commission on September 11, 2024. The move followed the wreckage left behind by the 2023 South Lhonak Glacial Lake Outburst Flood. Experts spent months drafting a plan to secure the region and prevent future catastrophe. The recommendations prioritize better emergency responses and long-term resilience for the mountain state.

Tamang promised quick action. The administration intends to implement these findings with total commitment and shared duty. The Chief Minister stated, "The government would take forward the recommendations with determination and a sense of collective responsibility." He wants Sikkim to act as a model for the entire Himalayan region when it comes to climate safety.
