Sikkim Tightens Flood Defenses Against Glacial Lake Risks

Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Secretary R. Telang gathered state officials, central agencies, and defense leaders at the Tashiling Secretariat. They met to overhaul the state's defense against Glacial Lake Outburst Floods. The Department of Science and Technology presented sobering data on the 2023 South Lhonak Lake disaster. They now push for resilient infrastructure, better roads, and early warning systems.

Experts are looking at deep science to stop the next surge. They discussed hydrometeorological assessments, bathymetric surveys, and drone mapping. "Early Warning Systems must be efficient, reliable and capable of disseminating alerts at the earliest possible stage," Telang said. The state is now prioritizing high-risk zones.

Shako Chho Lake remains a primary concern as it lacks a natural outlet. It sits 13 kilometers from Thangu village. Officials ruled out siphon systems but are eyeing solar-powered pumps. Elsewhere, a moraine plug-wall is the plan for the Gurudongmar Complex. The Central Water Commission and the state are drafting a report for a flood-retention structure at Dolma Sampa.

The Geological Survey of India mapped the Teesta River corridor from Zema to Meli. They checked for seismic risks and slope stability. Meanwhile, NHPC and Greenko are upgrading their own monitoring at hydroelectric sites. Sikkim University researchers demanded better ground data to model debris flows. Telang ordered regular drills to ensure these complex layers of defense actually hold under pressure.
