Guwahati: A massive hillside collapse slammed into the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers between September 5 and 6, 2026. The slide occurred along the Naga-Tosa Road near the Theng Tunnel in North Sikkim. Debris partially choked the river flow at their confluence. Officials confirm that the Teesta flow has since normalized, though water continues to pool in both channels.
The Mangan District Administrative Centre received the report from local police in Chungthang. No injuries or deaths occurred. Teams from the Chungthang and Theng police stations are patrolling the area. They remain on high alert. Authorities are keeping a close watch on water levels at Sankalang OP and Phidang OP, where the water is currently described as "muddy" but otherwise stable.
The District Administration issued orders to alert lower-belt communities about the potential for further blockages. Staff remain stationed at the site to conduct a full assessment of the property damage. Officials promised to issue updates as more information becomes available.
