Guwahati: Authorities in Itanagar arrested Biri Tara after the rescue of an eight-year-old girl from Assam who suffered years of captivity and abuse. The girl, a native of Sarengjan village near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, was recovered after two videos surfaced on social media. These clips showed the child enduring physical and sexual assault. She is now safe at a child welfare centre.
A trafficker took the girl from her family in Ming Mang, near Gogamukh, under the guise of providing schooling and a better life. Instead, she ended up in Arunachal Pradesh working as a domestic helper under Tara. The victim belongs to a poor family from a marginalized community. Such households remain primary targets for predators operating near the state line.
This case highlights a broader danger. Minors from the Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts are frequently trafficked into Arunachal Pradesh for forced labor. Many victims face brutal conditions. Some disappear or die under murky circumstances while others carry the weight of long-term trauma. The girl's rescue marks a rare win against these networks. As local reports stated, the incident "brought attention to reports of minor girls being trafficked from the inter-state boundary areas of Assam's Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts to Arunachal Pradesh for forced labour and, in some cases, physical and sexual abuse."
