Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang rallied his state on August 20 to protect the Nepali language. He spoke during Bhasha Manyata Diwas 2026. The cause remains urgent. He pushed for younger generations to take ownership of their mother tongue.
Tamang called the inclusion of Nepali in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution a landmark achievement. It defined the identity of the Nepali-speaking community. He honored the writers, linguists, scholars, activists, and political leaders who fought for this legal status. These advocates secured the language its spot in the Constitution.
Language acts as the anchor for history, culture, and tradition. The Chief Minister demanded a collective effort to pass these roots to the youth. He wants to bolster the literary and cultural heritage of the state. "The Sikkim government has continued to prioritise the protection and promotion of the state's languages, alongside its diverse cultures, traditions, attire and community identities," Tamang said.
Officials plan to push initiatives that safeguard linguistic identity. They aim to foster unity and goodwill among all local communities. Tamang finished the day by offering his best wishes to Nepali speakers globally. He hopes for their peace, prosperity, and progress.
