Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang demanded higher standards for state infrastructure on September 15. Speaking at a National Engineers Day event held at Manan Kendra, he told engineers that projects must focus on public needs rather than just construction milestones. He insisted that development should be measured by its genuine impact on the lives of local citizens.
Engineers manage the state's roads, bridges, public buildings, power grids, and water systems. Tamang honored Bharat Ratna awardee M Visvesvaraya before highlighting how modern engineers now drive policy and leadership. He told the audience, "The role of engineers had expanded beyond technical work, with professionals increasingly involved in administration, policy implementation and leadership."
The state government plans to support these professionals through better job security and expanded roles. Officials confirmed the induction of 245 junior engineers into the state cadre. Tamang also promised to regularize young temporary workers and lean on the expertise of retired professionals for future planning. C Zangpo, president of the Retired Engineers Association, echoed the call for innovation.
Ministers, MLAs, and top government officials attended the event to celebrate the state's builders. Organizers honored retired engineers, architects, and contractors for their service. Young engineers should look to their predecessors for guidance, Tamang noted. He pushed them to master emerging technologies while ensuring all new infrastructure remains durable and sustainable.
