Guwahati: Search teams recovered the body of Tutumoni Duwara on Wednesday. This ends an 11-day hunt following a tragedy in Assam's Charaideo district. The victim vanished on July 19 when flash floods hit her home in Abhayapuri village, located under the Tengapukhuri Police Station. All four family members are now confirmed dead.
The family disaster began when rising floodwaters forced a retreat from the home of Rohini Duwara. Tutumoni and her daughter, 30-year-old Bidisha Duwara, were caught in the fast-moving current while trying to reach safety. The two sons, 36-year-old Bidyut Duwara and 25-year-old Biplab Duwara, jumped into the water to save them. They were quickly overcome by the surge. Search crews located the bodies of the children prior to finding the mother.
This marks one of the most painful losses of the monsoon season in Upper Assam. State records confirm the total flood death toll is now 75. Over 3.32 lakh people are trapped in the deluge across several districts. Government agencies report that, "Relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts are ongoing in the flood-hit areas." Operations continue to manage the state's grim situation.
