Guwahati: A speeding Maruti Baleno rammed a scooty from behind in Pathsala on Wednesday night. The crash injured journalist Sasangka Talukdar and Sidhartha Roy, an employee of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department. The impact threw both men onto the road.
Witnesses noted that Roy wore a helmet, likely preventing fatal head trauma. Medics initially treated him at a local facility before transferring him to a Guwahati hospital for specialized care. Talukdar also suffered injuries during the collision.
The car involved, bearing registration number AS19L 7794, was reportedly moving at high speed. The victims blamed the lack of service roads in the small town for the danger, noting that pedestrians and motorists share the same pavement. One victim stated, "Pathsala is a small town where many people walk along the roads, and light vehicles share the same carriageway due to the absence of service roads. Drivers should be extremely careful, and speed limits must be strictly enforced so that no one else has to suffer such an accident."
Local residents want changes. They called for stricter traffic enforcement, speed-calming measures, and better regulation of four-wheelers. The town remains on edge.
